Explore the sitesOrthodox Christianity has deep roots in the Balkans, carried from Byzantium and given a distinct voice by Saint Sava, who founded the independent Serbian Church in 1219.
The medieval monasteries are its treasures: Studenica, with its marble church and 13th-century frescoes, Sopoćani and Mileševa, home of the famous White Angel. In Montenegro, the cliffside Ostrog Monastery and the monastery in the old royal capital of Cetinje remain places of pilgrimage, while Belgrade’s Temple of Saint Sava rises as one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
Across Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Albania and Slovenia, Orthodox communities keep their own heritage alive, from Sarajevo’s Old Orthodox Church and Tvrdoš Monastery near Trebinje to Krka Monastery in Dalmatia and the icons of the painter Onufri in Berat. Visitors are welcome to the liturgy, feast days and quiet monastery courtyards, where time still moves to the rhythm of prayer.
