Bridge on Duman (Firdus Bridge)
The bridge on Duman, also known as Firdus Bridge, is one of the most picturesque old bridges in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in Livno, on the Bistrica stream. It stands only about a hundred meters from its source — Duman, one of the most beautiful karst springs in the country, whose appearance resembles the famous Buna spring. There are no written records about the bridge, and it is believed to have been built at the end of the 17th or the beginning of the 18th century, during Ottoman rule.
Folk tradition says tanners whose workshops stood nearby raised it. The bridge is about twenty-seven metres long and seems to span the river with one great stone arch, while a smaller opening by the bank crosses a side channel of the Bistrica. Numerous departures from usual Ottoman bridge-building show it was made entirely by local Livno masters, renowned stonemasons. Today it is a national monument and an inseparable part of Livno's townscape.
