About This Landmark

Tvrdoš Monastery

Tvrdoš Monastery is one of the oldest spiritual sites in Herzegovina, on the bank of the Trebišnjica, five kilometers from Trebinje. It was built on the foundations of a 4th-century church, making it the oldest living monastery in this region. The present church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, and its special feature is a glass floor — a "window into the past" through which the foundations of the ancient church can be seen. Over the centuries the monastery was destroyed and rebuilt several times, and it took on its present appearance in the 20th century.

Tvrdoš is closely connected with Saint Basil of Ostrog, who took monastic vows here, which is why it is also called "Ostroški i Tvrdoški". In addition to its spiritual and cultural heritage, the monastery is today widely known for its winery: the monks tend the vineyards and preserve in stone cellars a wine-making tradition more than five centuries old. Set in a peaceful Herzegovinian landscape, Tvrdoš combines history, faith and excellent wine.
