The canyon of the Cvrcka River
The canyon of the Cvrcka River is one of the wildest and least known canyons in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, located between Kneževo and Kotor Varoš. The Cvrcka flows through it, the largest left tributary of the Vrbanja, whose course is cut into rock and tufa for almost its entire length. The river is formed by the confluence of two headstreams — Međurača and Vukača — which rise high on the slopes of Mount Čemernica, on the watershed between Jakotina and the streams that flow into the Ugar. After receiving Bukovica, its only major tributary, Cvrcka enters a deep and steep canyon whose cliffs in places rise more than 400 meters above the surrounding plateau.
Cvrcka is best known as one of the most attractive canyoning destinations in this part of the country. Its course is marked by numerous waterfalls, cascades, stone slides, and a series of whirlpools, making a crossing through the canyon a true full-day challenge — depending on conditions and experience, it takes 6 to 10 hours. For those not seeking an extreme adventure, a hiking trail runs through the canyon, following the river for almost its entire length and revealing scenic landscapes, cool natural pools, and authentic old watermills. The canyon opens into Večićko polje, near Vrbanjci, where the river calms at around 300 meters above sea level.
