Rodon Castle
Rodon Castle (also known as Skanderbeg's Castle), is one of the most impressive natural and historical attractions of the Albanian coast, a rocky peninsula that extends into the Adriatic Sea at the northern end of the Gulf of Durrës.
The castle was built in the first half of the 15th century under the leadership of Gjergj Kastrioti - Skanderbeg, the Albanian national hero, as a defensive fortress against Ottoman invasions. Its construction began around 1450 and was completed around 1452, with walls about 400 m long and defensive towers, offering a fortified position overlooking the Adriatic Sea.
The castle was also used as a strategic resistance point during the siege of Kruja and, according to historical sources, served as the place from which Skanderbeg and his family departed for Brindisi in 1466, at the height of the efforts against the Ottoman forces.
Near the castle is also located St. Anthony's Church, a cultural monument of historical and architectural value, which together with the castle walls creates a rich cultural-historical atmosphere amidst wild nature.
For visitors seeking tranquility and natural beauty, the area offers beautiful white sand beaches and opportunities for nature walks, hiking, relaxing by the sea, or panoramic photography away from the crowds of typical beaches.
