About This Landmark

Ozren Monastery

Ozren Monastery is located in the settlement of Kaluđerica, on the mountain of the same name, 7 km south of Petrovo. It is dedicated to Saint Father Nicholas. According to tradition, it was founded by King Dragutin Nemanjić, who ruled this area in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, although written sources record the monastery's flourishing only in the 16th and early 17th centuries. The first written mention is an inscription from 1587 above the entrance door.

The church was painted in 1605/06 in the Raška style, with frescoes by Father Strahinja of Budimlja, whose work connects Ozren with the wider Serbian spiritual sphere (Piva, Morača, Dobrun). The monastery preserves the incorrupt hand of Saint Marina and relics of Saint King Dragutin, Saint Prince Lazar, and the Holy Cross. A major restoration was carried out from 2003 to 2007, with the frescoes restored in 2012. The monastery has been a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina since 2003, and every year on the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God it hosts a large folk gathering.
