National Theatre of Republika Srpska

The National Theatre of Republika Srpska in Banja Luka was founded on 2 September 1930 as the National Theatre of the Vrbas Banovina, on the initiative of Ban Svetislav Tisa Milosavljević and the Prosvjeta society. It opened on 18 October 1930, first in the adapted Sokolana building. After the Second World War, it was called the National Theatre of Bosanska Krajina.

The House of King Peter I the Great Liberator, where the theatre is still located today, was built in 1933–1934 according to the design of Josif Goldner, in the Bauhaus style with elements of neoclassicism, with bas-reliefs by Dragutin Inkiostri Medenjak on the entrance facade. The theatre hall had a capacity of 500 seats. The building was adapted in 1959 according to the plans of Vladimir Dobrović, restored after the 1969 earthquake based on the design of Vjenceslav Rihter, and repaired in 2004/05. It has been protected as a cultural property since 1986, and was declared a National Monument of BiH in 2013.
