About This Landmark
Monument to the Liberators of Trebinje from the First World War
The monument stands on the site of suffering, where 77 men and two women were brutally hanged during World War I. It was officially unveiled on August 5, 1938, to mark the twentieth anniversary of Trebinje's liberation.
The monumental structure consists of a massive granite pedestal, a monolithic column four to five meters high, and an exceptionally sculpted angel in the Nemanjić style. This artistic vision, based on Jovan Dučić's drawings, was brought to life by a foreign master.
Inspirisan idejom o vječnoj pobjedi dobra nad zlom, Dučić je zamislio anđela sa isukanim mačem koji bdije nad gradom kao vječni čuvar mira i slobode, dok nogama snažno pritišće zmiju - simbol zla, patnje i ropstva.
