About This Landmark
Ljubljana Castle
The fortress on the hill above the old town, reached by funicular in one minute or on foot in twenty.
It is the one place that makes the city’s geography legible, you can see how small Ljubljana is, and how close the Alps are.
A castle has stood on this hill since at least the eleventh century; most of what survives is fifteenth and sixteenth century, rebuilt after the 1511 earthquake. The reason to go up is the Outlook Tower, which gives the full sweep of the city against the Kamnik Alps, and the Viewing Tower walkway. There is a Puppetry Museum inside, a permanent Slovenian history exhibition, and a restaurant in the old shooting range.
