About This Landmark

Kraljeva Sutjeska

Kraljeva Sutjeska is a small but historically significant place in the municipality of Kakanj, about twelve kilometres northeast of the town, in the basin of the Trstionica stream. Together with the nearby Bobovac fortress, this settlement was the seat of the medieval Bosnian kings of the Kotromanić dynasty. In the 14th and 15th centuries, it was one of the centers of Bosnia's cultural rise — already then a settlement of urban type, once also known as Banski dvor.

Today the place is best known for its Franciscan monastery, whose archive keeps the oldest parish registers in Bosnia and Herzegovina and valuable incunabula. There is also the Dusper House, central Bosnia's oldest house, and one of the country's oldest mosques – a unique witness to a rich past. On the nearby hill of Grgurevo the foundations of the former royal court can still be seen. Kraljeva Sutjeska invites the traveller to step into the heart of medieval Bosnia.
