Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Trebinje, or Trebinje-Mrkan Diocese, is one of the oldest dioceses in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it is first mentioned in a bull of Pope Benedict VIII from 1022. Construction of the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary began in 1880, shortly after the arrival of the Austro-Hungarian army, and was completed four years later, in 1884.
On the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the Trebinje Diocese and the 100th anniversary of the church, the former parish church was declared a cathedral in 1984. Due to its historical, religious, and cultural significance, the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2006.
