Čaršija Mosque
The Čaršija Mosque in Fojnica, also known as the Šaban Ahmed Efendi Mosque, is the heart of the town center and the most spacious place of worship in this area. Built in 1666 by the then qadi of Kreševo and Fojnica, this mosque has throughout the centuries been not only a religious but also an educational center, originally accompanied by a madrasa and a tekke. Its history bears witness to turbulent times, but also to the incredible determination of the people to rebuild and restore it after every destruction – from the fire in 1945 to the damage during the last war.
The mosque’s current appearance dates back to 1988, when a larger and more functional building was constructed on the same site to meet the needs of a growing number of worshippers. In recent years, the complex has been further enriched with a modern annex that includes a library and a mekteb, continuing the tradition of Šaban Ahmed Efendi that the mosque should be a center of knowledge and literacy. Located in the very center, it now stands as a symbol of renewal and the modern identity of Fojnica.
