About This Landmark

Brusa Bezistan

Brusa bezistan, built in 1551 on the orders of Rustem-paša, the grand vizier of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, is one of the most striking buildings in Sarajevo's Baščaršija. Recognisable by its six large roof domes and rectangular layout with four entrances facing all four directions, the bezistan was for centuries the heart of the city's trading life. It was named after the Turkish city of Bursa, from where the silk once sold in these stone corridors was brought.

Unlike Gazi Husrev-beg's bezistan, here silk was sold alongside household goods and smaller furniture. Today, Brusa bezistan has a new life — it houses the permanent exhibition of the Sarajevo City Museum with archaeological and ethnological collections that show the city's history from prehistory to the Ottoman period. The stone vaults and domes still exude the spirit of old Sarajevo.
