Brankovića kula
Assumptions about the existence of the old town of Trebinje, where the famous Jelena Anžujska also had her court, place it at the site now popularly known as Brankovina. The name of this area is linked to Brankovića kula, which played an important role as a watchtower and part of the defensive system of old Trebinje.
There are records of the Herzegovinian origins of the Branković family, which lived during the greatest rise of the medieval Serbian state, in the time of King Milutin and Stefan Dečanski, as well as in the era of King and Emperor Dušan. The Brankovićs are considered the last Serbian medieval dynasty to appear on the historical stage, from the first half of the 14th century to the first half of the 16th century.
According to tradition and historical records, the tower was built by župan Mladen, the founder of the Branković family and ruler of Trebinje and Dračevice. The family name comes from his son Branko, after whom the tower was named.
