About This Landmark

Borak stećak necropolis

The Borak necropolis is located on a hill above the village of Burati, in the municipality of Rogatica, along the Sokolac-Rogatica road on the Han-stjenički plateau. At the site, 212 visible, well-crafted stećci have been recorded, mostly oriented east-west, set in a young oak forest.

The necropolis was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016, and has held the status of a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina since 2008. Only three stećci are decorated - one chest-shaped stone and two gabled stones - with motifs such as a crescent moon, rosette, hand with a sword, and depictions of animals. Access to the site is free of charge.
