Višegrad
About This Landmark

Banja Vrućica

Nestled among fragrant conifer forests, at an altitude of 460 meters, Višegradska Banja is one of the oldest and most beautiful oases of peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Known for its healing properties since the time of Mehmed Pasha Sokolović, this spa has for decades been a destination for those seeking recovery in the embrace of untouched nature.

The healing properties of these springs were first recognized by the Grand Vizier Mehmed Pasha Sokolović during the construction of his famous bridge on the Drina. The stone Turkish bath (hamam), which he built in the 16th century, is still in use today, offering visitors the chance to experience the authentic spirit of times gone by while enjoying the warmth of thermal water.

The spa was named after an extremely rare and delicate fern – maidenhair fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris). This plant grows exclusively at thermal water springs in Višegrad and nowhere else in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Legend has it that fairies bathed in these waters, and that the fern is actually their hair left behind in the stone.
