About Ptuj

Ptuj

Ptuj is the oldest recorded settlement in Slovenia. Roman Poetovio, and a legionary base before that. The castle above the old town holds a good regional collection, and Ptujska klet beneath it has been storing wine since 1239, making it the oldest wine cellar in the country. Ptuj is also the centre of Kurentovanje, the pre-Lent carnival whose kurent figures are on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list; if travelling in February, that changes everything about the town.
