About Nova Gorica

Nova Gorica

Nova Gorica was built from nothing after 1947, when the border left the historic city of Gorizia in Italy. The two towns now function as one urban area with an open frontier, and they jointly held the European Capital of Culture title in 2025, the first cross-border pairing to do so. The town itself is modernist and planned rather than picturesque; its value to a visitor is as the gateway to Brda and the Vipava valley, and for the Sabotin and Sveta Gora ridges above it.
