About Baška

Baška

The center of Baška is its lively seafront, lined with cafes, restaurants and shops. The main attraction is Vela Plaža, a nearly two-kilometer-long pebble beach with fine sand underfoot as you enter the water. Known for its turquoise sea and mountain backdrop, Vela Plaža is good for swimming, sunbathing and water sports. The beach is well equipped with amenities, which makes it popular with families, while quieter coves and naturist beaches such as Bunculuka offer more secluded options. Another Vela Luka bay, nearby, offers a tranquil beach for those who prefer fewer people.

Baška is also a good place for outdoor enthusiasts. The surrounding hills and cliffs are crisscrossed with hiking and cycling trails, including the famous Path to the Moon, Put do Mjeseca, which leads to viewpoints over the Adriatic and nearby islands, and whose bare, pale rocks do resemble a lunar landscape. The area’s karst landscape is dotted with olive groves, vineyards and wild herbs, which provide a scenic backdrop for exploration. Adventurous visitors can try the Zipline Edison, rock climbing or the Vrženica Canyon, a narrow gorge popular with hikers, or take boat trips to nearby islands such as Rab or the uninhabited Prvić.

Cultural highlights include the parish church in the old town, the Adriatic Aquarium with its collection of marine life, the Baška Heritage Museum, called Bašćanska kuća, which shows local life, and the Glagolitic Trail, a series of stone monuments that celebrate the region’s linguistic heritage. Local festivals, concerts and food events enliven the summer months, offering a taste of traditional music, dance and cuisine. Baška’s restaurants serve fresh seafood, lamb, homemade pasta and local wines, reflecting the island’s culinary traditions, and a gastro boutique in the town sells island products such as olive oil, honey and wine.

Krk’s local wine, Žlahtina, a fresh white from the island’s north, and the island’s pasta, šurlice, are good choices at the table. Fish dishes are cooked simply with olive oil and herbs, and lamb from the island’s pastures is also common.

History & heritage

The story of Baška

Baška’s history stretches back to ancient times, with archaeological finds pointing to early Illyrian and Roman settlements. The village rose to prominence in the medieval era, becoming a center of Glagolitic literacy and Croatian culture. The most significant artifact from this period is the Baška Tablet, discovered in the Church of St. Lucy in Jurandvor, just outside the village. Dating to about the year 1100, the tablet is one of the oldest known monuments inscribed in the Glagolitic script and is considered a national treasure. The text records a gift of land to a monastery by King Zvonimir and is one of the first mentions of the Croatian name in a native language. The original is in the Croatian Academy in Zagreb, and a replica is displayed in the church of St. Lucy, in a quiet valley a few kilometers from the town.
