Ruins near Kamnik.
A medieval town at the foot of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, and the road up to Velika Planina.
Kamnik is a half-hour from Ljubljana and mostly overlooked, which is its advantage. The old town is a single long street under two castle ruins. For most visitors its real function is as the gateway to Velika Planina, the high pasture reached by cable car from Kamniška Bistrica, one of the few places in Europe where a working herdsmen’s settlement is still in seasonal use.
