Beaches and Natural Attractions

When discussing beaches, Ulcinj is renowned beyond Montenegro’s borders for its long, beautiful shores with fine, flour-like sand. The coast spans 33km, including 18km of beaches, with 15km of sandy stretches. Among about 25 beaches, standout sandy ones include Velika Plaza, Mala Plaza, Ada Bojana, Borove Sume, and Valdanos. Visitors flock to Ulcinj for sun, sea, and sandy beaches, often called “God given beaches” due to their warm, grayish sand. The warm, clear sea has 56 meters of transparency, the highest on the Adriatic, and a mild coastal climate makes it irresistible for tourists.

Geography and Location

Located in the farthest south part of the Adriatic coast, in southeast Montenegro, Ulcinj belongs to the marginal subtopic zone of the European Mediterranean due to its outstanding natural and geographic characteristics. Its southern part extends 30 kilometers to the Adriatic Sea, with River Bojana to the east. Moreover, Sasko Lake lies in the central part, and the Rumija mountain massif shelters Ulcinj in the bay.

The story of Ulcinj

Historically, Ulcinj is one of the oldest towns on the Adriatic coast, believed to be over 2,000 years old. Cultures of Orient and West collided here, leaving a rich historical inheritance felt in every step. Indeed, traces of settlements date back before the 5th century B.C., with Illyrians likely founding it during the free Illyrian state’s peak bloom.

Originally named Kolhinijum after Kolhidians, a Greek-origin tribe thought to have founded the old Ulcinj Lake, the city’s history adds depth to its appeal.
