About Užice

Užice

There are cities that are simply visited, and there are those that are read. Užice belongs to the latter kind – like a novel in which every page changes its tone, but never its character. Rising above the Đetinja River on a steep cliff stands the Old Town of Užice, a medieval fortress that has watched over the valley for centuries. Its stone walls remember caravans, armies, and merchants, but also the quiet of modern times, when the view from the fortress resembles a postcard more than a lookout post.

Downstream, almost cinematically understated, stands the Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Đetinja River – the first in Europe designed according to the principles of Nikola Tesla. Today, it may appear modest, yet its story carries the energy of a remarkable technological breakthrough.

During the Ottoman period, Užice was so densely populated that folk songs referred to it as “Little Constantinople.” Today, those traces are nearly invisible, yet they can still be felt in the atmosphere of Jokanović House, one of the few preserved examples of Balkan-Oriental architecture. It is a place where the past does not sit behind glass displays, but whispers through timber, courtyards, and shadows.

If Užice has a heart, it beats in the rhythm of history. The name Užice Republic still sounds almost unreal today – a brief yet powerful liberation in 1941, when this region became one of the few free territories in occupied Europe. This achievement is commemorated through the exhibitions of the National Museum of Užice and the monumental Kadinjača Memorial Complex, where the silence of the mountain carries the weight of history.

The post-war era brought Užice the status of a favored city and created space for bold urban planning ideas. The most impressive result of that period is Partisans’ Square, a space that remains one of the finest achievements of Yugoslav architecture. Spacious, harmonious, and dignified, the square is not merely a meeting place, but a stage where everyday life transforms into a small urban ritual.

Užice is also a perfect starting point for unforgettable adventures. A ride on the Šargan Eight Railway is more than a train journey – it is a return to a time when speed and landscape shared a different relationship. Nearby lies Drvengrad, the ethno-village and film town created by director Emir Kusturica, where every street has its own name and story.

For those who enjoy heights, the Gold Gondola on Zlatibor offers spectacular views, while nature lovers can seek out scenic viewpoints in Tara National Park or explore the underground wonders of Potpeće Cave and Stopića Cave. Tradition lives on in the Old Village of Sirogojno, while craftsmanship thrives in the village of Zlakusa, renowned for its pottery inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

And then comes the moment when everything comes together – at the table. Komplet lepinja is not only the world’s best breakfast, as ranked by TasteAtlas, but a ritual in itself. Warm, rich, and full of flavors that need no explanation. It is perfectly paired with Užice prosciutto, simple and flawless, much like the region from which it comes.

Užice does not try to impress at first glance. Instead, it draws you in slowly, almost imperceptibly – and only when you move on do you realize that you are taking away far more than you had planned.
