About This Landmark
Monument to Petar II Petrović Njegoš
This magnificent monument dedicated to the great poet - the first ever erected in Njegoš’s honor - was officially unveiled on 28 and 29 May 1934, in the presence of the king’s envoy.
The initiative to erect it was launched by Jovan Dučić, who personally bought the land from the Catholic Church for this purpose. The sculpture itself was made by the famous sculptor Toma Rosandić, a distinguished student of the renowned Ivan Meštrović, while the imposing granite pedestal was designed and built by the respected Belgrade architect Dragiša Brašovan.
