Maculje stećak necropolis
The Maculje necropolis, also known as the Petrified Wedding Party, is located in the Rostovo area, about 20 km from Novi Travnik toward Gornji Vakuf, along the route of an old Roman road. It has more than one hundred tombstones, dominated by chests and slabs, with a smaller number of gabled tombstones and crosses, carved from local limestone. It was named after a folk legend about wedding guests who, caught by a sudden storm and cold, turned to stone at this spot. A special feature of the site is the anthropomorphic crosses of the central Bosnian type, with rudimentarily shaped side arms and a semicircular upper end resembling a human head — the tallest among them reaches 220 cm in height.
The necropolis is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and art historian Đoko Mazalić described such monuments as a unique, distinct phenomenon in the cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It has also been declared a national monument of the country.
