About This Landmark

Vrutak Lake

Vrutak is a unique artificial reservoir located on the western edge of Popovo Polje, near Hutovo. It was created in 1979 with the construction of the Čapljina Hydroelectric Power Plant and today serves an important role as the upper compensation basin of this energy system. It covers about 70 hectares, with an impressive volume of over 7 million cubic meters of water, supplied by the Trebišnjica River through a long canal that runs through the Herzegovinian karst.

Although it is entirely made of concrete, Vrutak Lake has a special visual contrast - its bottom and shores are covered with a thin layer of grass, giving it an unusual blend of natural and artificial surroundings. The average depth is 4 to 5 meters, while the central channel running through the lake reaches a much greater depth.

The name Vrutak comes from ancient times, when this area had a unique spring - a well of "living water" that never ran dry. People and livestock gathered around that well, creating vivid scenes of everyday life in Popovo Polje. Today, although hidden beneath the surface of the lake, this area still carries strong historical and symbolic significance, connecting the story of nature, people, and modern technology.
