The Partisan Memorial Cemetery
The Partisan Memorial Cemetery in Mostar is one of the most striking memorial sites in the former Yugoslavia and a masterpiece of 20th century architecture. Built in 1965 in the western part of Mostar, this imposing structure is the work of the renowned architect Bogdan Bogdanović, known for his symbolic and poetic vision of memorial spaces. The cemetery was erected in honor of 661 fallen Mostar partisans, fighters of the National Liberation struggle in the Second World War, and each of the 661 grave markers carries its own special symbolic meaning. Surrounded by lush greenery, the space was conceived as a place of remembrance, respect, and harmony with nature, creating a unique atmosphere of silence and contemplation. Today it attracts visitors from around the world — lovers of architecture, history, and all those who wish to pay their respects and feel the power of a place that unites the past and nature.
