The Banja Luka Gate

Banjalučka Gate has for centuries stood as the bastion of the northern entrance to the royal city of Jajce, serving as a key defensive point against invaders. This massive fortification, consisting of a tower and a passageway, fascinates with its grandeur — the walls are as much as 4.55 meters thick, testifying to the military importance the city held throughout history. Once protected by a dry defensive moat and iron-clad doors, the gate was an impenetrable barrier that closed with heavy lever-operated shutters, traces of which are still visible to curious visitors today.

The interior of the gate gradually widens from north to south (from 3.21 m to 5.50 m), an architectural trick that made movement within the walls easier, while the narrower outer entrance was easier to defend.
On the northern doorjamb there is an authentic engraving of a warrior from the Ottoman period, serving as a silent reminder of the customs and soldiers who once stood guard here.

Similarity to Medvjed Tower: The construction technique, especially the vertical stacking of stone, links this gate to the famous Medvjed Tower, pointing to the unique style of the Jajce fortification school.

Although it was originally designed to keep the enemy out, the gate underwent its biggest change in 1906. Due to the needs of modern times and the introduction of wider vehicles, its outer frame was expanded and the iron doors were removed. However, thanks to drawings from 1890, the battlements at the top of the walls were successfully reconstructed, restoring the structure's recognizable medieval appearance.
