About This Landmark

Franciscan Museum

The Franciscan Monastery of St. Luke in Jajce preserves the heart of medieval Bosnian history, serving as a quiet guardian of the most precious artifacts spanning from antiquity to the fall of the Kingdom. Although the monastery holds an impressive collection of over 2,000 exhibits, only around 100 of the most representative items are displayed in its museum, making each showcase exceptionally valuable. Here, centuries intertwine through the archaeological, ethnographic, and sacred collections—from bronze Mošunj-type swords to luxurious replicas of Hrvoje's Missal and the Hval Manuscript, which bear witness to the high level of literacy and culture in medieval Bosnia.

The most emotional and historically significant exhibit is the glass sarcophagus containing the remains of the last Bosnian king, Stjepan Tomašević. The king's skeleton, unearthed in 1888 on Hum Hill by archaeologist Ćiro Truhelka, represents a direct physical link to the end of Bosnia's independence in 1463. A visit to this quiet hall, beside the king's bones, offers visitors a rare opportunity for deep respect and reflection on the fate of Bosnia, making this monastery a true sanctuary of national history.
