About This Landmark

Rama-Šćit Franciscan Monastery

The Franciscan Monastery in Šćit, with the Church of the Assumption of Mary, is one of the most important spiritual and cultural centres of the Rama valley, about ten kilometres west of Prozor. Franciscans have been present in Rama since the 15th century, and through a turbulent past it was destroyed and rebuilt many times. The present church was built between 1873 and 1881 and consecrated in 1903. It is a three-nave basilica crowned by a slender bell tower over forty metres high, a recognisable local landmark.

It preserves valuable art and spiritual heritage, and its courtyard holds works by contemporary Bosnian sculptors, such as the Rama Cross and Our Lady's Gate. It is also a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Today it is a place of prayer, pilgrimage and gathering, and a key stop for all who explore the treasures of the Rama region.
