River Tara
The Tara River is one of the most beautiful and cleanest rivers in the Balkans, 146 kilometers long, formed below Mount Komovi in Montenegro. The last 40 kilometers of its course form the natural border between Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina, where it flows into the Piva at Šćepan Polje and together they form the Drina. The Tara Canyon, 82 kilometers long and in places up to 1,300 meters deep, ranks just behind the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River and is the deepest canyon in Europe. The river was added to UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere programme in 1977.
The most attractive section for rafting is the last 25 kilometers of the river, with its famous rapids and crystal-clear water that make the Tara one of the most sought-after rafting destinations in Europe. On the Bosnia and Herzegovina side, in Republika Srpska, Tara Nature Park was declared in 2022 and covers 14,453 hectares of a steep-sided valley along the border with Montenegro.
