Church of the Most Pure Heart of Mary
Located in the heart of Bijeljina, the Church of the Most Pure Heart of Mary stands as a silent witness to time and an architectural gem that captivates with its elegance. Built in 1886 according to the designs of the renowned Josip Vancaš, this single-nave building is an outstanding example of Neo-Romanesque style, created during a period of intensive Austro-Hungarian construction. Due to its exceptional historical value, it was rightly declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2015.
The interior of the church holds a special artistic touch in the form of wall paintings by Stjepan Tonković. These works, created in the spirit of academic realism, perfectly complement the prayerful calm of the space. Although construction was financed with the help of numerous European associations of the time, the church today stands as a symbol of unity and the cultural heritage of Semberija that you should not miss. Every stone of this facade tells a story of continuity, art, and spirituality that has endured for centuries across the plain.
