About This Landmark

Monastery of St. Petka

The Monastery of Svete Petke is a women's monastery dedicated to Saint Paraskeva, on the edge of the Pet Jezera settlement, at the entrance to Bijeljina from the direction of Sremska Rača. Construction began in 2001; the land was consecrated in 2003, and construction of the building began two years later. The monastery is built of solid brick in the Russian style, with two churches — the lower one (the crypt), dedicated to Saint Sergei of Radonezh, and the upper one, dedicated to Sveta Petka, decorated in the Serbo-Byzantine style.

In the crypt is the reliquary with the relics of the priest-martyr Jovan Knjažev, as well as fragments of the relics of Sergei of Radonezh, a gift from Russian Patriarch Alexy II. The five-domed church, covered in gold sheet metal, has an iconostasis carved from oak. Services are held in the crypt. The monastery has been led by Abbess Stefanida since 2006. A retirement home and kindergarten are being built next to the monastery grounds, and small churches are also planned to represent the architecture of the Orthodox world.
