About This Landmark

Sultan Ahmed Mosque

Sultan Ahmed Mosque is one of the most recognizable historical buildings in the Una River valley, in Kulen Vakuf. It was built between 1603 and 1613, during the reign of Sultan Ahmed I, after whom it was named.

What makes it especially interesting is its unusual position and architecture – the mosque was built above a space with shops and passages on all sides, and is entered by a stone staircase, giving it a unique appearance in the entire region.

Throughout history, it was damaged and rebuilt several times. It was destroyed several times in wars and fires, and the last reconstruction was carried out in the 1990s, when it was restored to its original shape and dimensions, although brick was used instead of stone.

Located in the old urban core, the mosque bears witness to the rich past of Kulen Vakuf, a place mentioned in 18th-century Ottoman documents as Džisr-i-kebir – the “Great Bridge.” The town was once built on an artificial island, cut through by branches of the Una, with houses and shops raised above the water on wooden pillars.

Today, the mosque is not only a religious building, but also a powerful symbol of survival, continuity, and the identity of this region, where nature, history, and spirituality intertwine.
