Roman Bridge (Ilidža)
The Roman Bridge is one of the most picturesque old bridges near Sarajevo, set at Plandište by Ilidža, its seven stone arches spanning the river Bosna. Despite its name, the bridge dates from the Ottoman period – it was named for a relief of a human figure on one of its stone slabs and for the dressed stone reused from the nearby Roman settlement of Aquae Sulphurae.
Its exact date is unknown, but it is thought to date from the mid-16th century; around 1762 it was restored by Rustem-paša at the citizens' request. The bridge is just over fifty metres long and rests on six river piers with ice-breakers that protect it from the swollen river. Today it is one of only four preserved old stone bridges in Sarajevo and is listed among the national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Set amid greenery near Ilidža, it is perfect for a quiet break and a riverside walk.
