About This Landmark

Gorica Quarter

The “Gorica” neighborhood, one of the three historical neighborhoods of the city of Berat, is located on the hill opposite the Castle, on the left side of the Osum River. It represents an early residential center of the Orthodox community, and has been historically connected to the rest of the city through the Gorica Bridge, a cultural heritage monument of the 18th century.

The urban structure of the neighborhood is characterized by a vertical extension: in the upper belt there are small, compact dwellings, built with stones and traditional tiled roofs, while

In the lower belt, near the banks of the Osumi, larger houses appear, with ornate verandas, which belonged to the wealthy merchant and civic classes of the 18th century.

After the 1851 earthquake, many of the houses were rebuilt or restored, which is reflected in the current architectural style, combining elements of the early Ottoman period with later interventions. The two- and three-story houses of Gorica constitute a unique architectural ensemble, distinguished by small windows, thick stone walls, and facades plastered in light colors.

In the center of the neighborhood is the Church of Saint Spyridon, a shrine of high historical and spiritual value, rebuilt in 1864 and known for its role as the first center where public mass was held after the ban on religion during communism in Albania.

The Gorica neighborhood, declared a museum area, represents a harmonious coexistence of Orthodox heritage, civic architecture and the natural landscape of Berat. With its characteristic cobblestone streets, preserved houses and view facing the Castle, it offers a different experience of the city's urban and spiritual history.
