About This Landmark

National History Museum

The National Historical Museum, located in the center of Tirana, opposite Skanderbeg Square, is the largest and most important museum institution in Albania. Opened in 1981, this museum's mission is to preserve, document, and present the country's history from antiquity to the contemporary period.

Its facade is known for the monumental mosaic “Albania”, a prominent work of public art that depicts key moments and figures from the nation’s historical journey. Inside, the museum is organized into thematic pavilions that cover different historical periods, starting from Illyria, the Middle Ages, the National Renaissance, the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War, the communist period, and important documents of Albanian statehood.

Its exhibitions offer a combination of archaeological artifacts, historical documents, cultural objects, and interpretive installations, which enable visitors to follow the development of Albanian society over the centuries in a chronological and structured manner.

The National History Museum is an important destination for any visitor seeking to gain a deeper understanding of Albanian identity and heritage, offering a rich cultural and educational experience in the heart of the capital.
